Chiton Apartments, Athens, Greece
The project involved the redesign and change of use of an existing derelict office building at the Athens city centre and its transformation into hipster apartments.
Our aim was to create an apartment building that would improve the look and feel of the currently dilapidated neighbourhood and through its concept and form become closely associated with the city of Athens.
To realise this vision, the existing building’s elevations would need to be clad in a new material, and the volume of the building would need to be ‘dressed’ in a new light-weight structure. The ‘concept’ of producing a contemporary artistic interpretation of the “CHITON”, the ancient Greek garment, was considered fit for purpose.
Location:
Athens, Greece
Type:
Hotel
Status:
In progress
Size:
1500 sqm
The new elevations consist of a series of unfolding lightweight white plasterboard panels simulating the folding of the ancient Greek garment linearly along the length of each level.
They were designed to incorporate the outdoor living space (balconies) of the upper floor apartments and provide shading & shelter to the window openings.
The ground level until recently hosted commercial uses. By recessing the ground floor border of the existing building away from the street, we managed to create a zone between the new ground floor apartments and the busy street.
Dense vegetation along this border was used to ensure inhabitants increased privacy during the day and a better view and protection from the intrusive eyes of the passers-by.
