Palaio Faliro, Greece
The Attica metropolitan seadrome for Hellenic Seaplanes S.A. located at SEF was selected through an invited competition. Hellenic Seaplanes S.A is the Leading Seaplane Company in Greece aiming to connect the country through seaports and lakes thus solving the transportation problems of those hard to reach areas forever changing the demography of tourism in Greece.
We first articulated the building into a base, middle and top, which were designed around the specific needs of each part of the program. The Seadrome consisted of the floating runaways, the reception and check-in areas, waiting rooms, offices, a medical facility with ambulance for the immediate transportation of patients to hospitals in Attica, commercial spaces, 3 restaurants and a conference center, which comprised 3 meeting rooms and an amphitheater of 600 spectators as well as 2 multi-purpose spaces for cultural events.
The building emerges from the sea and with a smooth upward form rises above the ground level; its appearance reminiscent of a ‘sea creature’ washed up on the shore with its long limbs (the runaways) still hanging over the sea surface and the seaplanes collecting passengers and cargo as birds which glean micro-organisms over a living animal’s body.
In the heart of the ‘creature’ lies a green lung; the central planted atrium that provides abundant light and natural ventilation.
The ‘limps’ covered with dense vegetation provide shading to its’ lower parts and create a beautiful promenade near the waterfront, offering to visitors panoramic views towards the sea and landing area of seaplanes
