The project is located in the heart of the residential settlement Aetheria Heights, near Pafos in Cyprus. We designed the piazza as a meeting and social point, a center of cultural and recreational activity for the settlement’s residents.
The building complex consists of a community club, a craft center, an art gallery, a café-restaurant, a mini market and a gym arranged linearly along the northwest side of the piazza. The building follows the natural slope, gradually rising from the ground up to define an enclosure towards the north.
This monolithic synthesis of linear elements portrays clarity and highlights the virtues of activity-based spatial design. The different levels are affiliated by an imperceptible circulation network. A continuous circulation loop is created over and around the buildings; a promenade that goes up to the landscaped roof of the ground floor towards the community club reaching the level of the upper road where the natural ground ascends to the highest point. The amphitheater is also mirroring the slope closing the loop in the opposite direction.
Our vision was to reproduce the function of a vigorous micro community that enunciates the existing natural environment, vibrates with local cultural heritage offering a sustainable platform of socialization in coherence with the rest of the settlement.
The passer’s gaze is allowed to penetrate the interior and capture glances of the movement within and observe the people ascending and descending the levels of the surrounding buildings.
The botanical gardens on the south east side with colorful native plants and herbs extend over the craft center roof and offer spiritual tranquility and visual pleasure.
